How do you begin a staff away event? How do you set the scene for an afternoon of collaboration? Apart from the obvious of cake, tea and coffee or human bingo!
At the beginning of the Faculty Engagement Team (FET) and Library Learning Services Unit (LLSU) ‘away afternoon’ to discuss Programme Level Approach (PLA) and share best practice the scene was set with an ice breaker. Each librarian had to write down their experiences of IDLT (Information and Digital Literacy Tutorial) activities, factors for success and common challenges on a correspondingly coloured post it. This got the collaborative energy flowing and ensured everyone felt connected in terms of experiencing similar issues. You can see the themes below – do you have similar experiences in your setting?
This then facilitated the main event of collaborating between the teams on embedding our IDLT framework into the new programme level approach. This activity personally gave me an insight into the workflow of the FET librarians and the engagements they have with academics and students. I was given food for thought in terms of how my tutorials and workshops can complement their embedded offer and the way in which we can signpost to one another.
How have you broken the ice at staff events?
