Library Help Week – The Virtual Advisory and Help Service:

The Virtual Advisory and Help Service answer enquiries via email, live chat, screen-sharing, SMS, Twitter and phone. Library Help Week, which this year is 25th-29th March, runs annually with the aim of showcasing the vast range of resources the library has to offer. The video below has been shared on our social media channels to give an insight into the activities of the Virtual Advisory Service.

Last year the Advisory Service collaborated with a team of Library Student Associates for Learning and Teaching (SALTs) and the Library Learning Services Unit, jointly analysing enquiries. This was undertaken as Participatory Action Research approach. Our aim was to develop support for Information and Digital Literacy queries which has resulted in enquiries being supported via the use of screen sharing software, screencasting, web conferencing, online tutorials, and videos, thereby creating high quality, targeted resolutions to these queries.

One of the main takeaways from the collaboration was that students were not aware of the support the library offer. This has resulted in increased efforts to raise visibility of our services both online and through marketing campaigns such as Library Help Week which this year has been themed around publicising a holistic view of our support services.

Thanks to Alison Morton, Library Services Manager – Virtual Advisory and Help Services,  for this post.
